Booking is the part most people get wrong, and it is the part that costs you the most time. Testing centres in the big metros are often booked out weeks ahead, so a booking made badly can push your test back by a month.
Only book through the official NaTIS portal at online.natis.gov.za, or in person at a DLTC. Sites that look official and charge a "service fee" to book on your behalf are common — check the domain before you pay anyone.
Option 1 — book online through NaTIS
The national booking portal is online.natis.gov.za. You register an account, pick a driving licence testing centre (DLTC), choose from the dates it has open, and pay the booking fee.
- 1Register on the NaTIS portal with your ID number and a working email address.
- 2Select "Learner's licence" as the service and choose your province.
- 3Pick a DLTC. Centres slightly out of town very often have far shorter queues than the big metro ones.
- 4Choose from the available dates and times.
- 5Pay the booking fee and save the confirmation — you will need it on the day.
Coverage varies by province, and some metros — Cape Town among them — run bookings through their own municipal portal instead of NaTIS. If your centre does not appear online, that usually means it takes walk-in bookings only. Confirm with the DLTC directly.
Option 2 — book in person at a DLTC
Walking in still works, and in some areas it is the only option. Go early — queues at popular centres start well before opening. Bring every document with you, because you generally complete the LL1 application form and book in the same visit.
You will normally be given a date some weeks out. Ask whether the centre keeps a cancellation list; a lot of centres will call you if an earlier slot opens up, and almost nobody asks.
What you pay, and when
There are two separate charges: a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and an issuing fee when you pass and the licence is printed. Fees are set provincially, so the total differs depending on where you test.
Booking mistakes worth avoiding
- Booking before you are ready to study. The date arrives faster than you think, and rebooking means paying the booking fee again.
- Choosing the closest centre by reflex. A centre 30 minutes further out can be weeks sooner.
- Not checking your ID details against the booking. A mismatch can get you turned away at the counter.
- Arriving without the eye test done, when your centre expects it in advance.
- Leaving the confirmation at home.
After you have booked
Use the wait. The learner's test is passed per section — rules of the road, road signs, and vehicle controls each have their own pass mark, and a strong section will not carry a weak one. Most people who fail do so on road signs, simply because there are a lot of them.
