Learners Test Practice
— Free K53 Exam Prep
Free learners test practice for the South African theory exam, built around the same 68-question paper you will sit at the DLTC. If you have been told to study “the K53” and are not sure what that means, this page explains the test end to end — then puts you straight into the questions.
“Learners Test” and “K53” Are the Same Thing
K53 is the name of the official South African driver testing method, so the learner’s licence theory exam is commonly called the K53 test. Searching for either term gets you to the same place. There is one national syllabus, and the theory content is identical whether you are testing for a motorbike, a car or a truck — only the minimum age and the vehicle you will later be licensed to drive change.
The theory test is written at a Driving Licence Testing Centre. Most centres now use the computerised version, the CLLT, on a touchscreen. Passing it gets you a learner’s licence valid for 24 months, which lets you drive while accompanied by a licensed driver, with L-plates displayed.
Step 1 — Work Out Which Code You Need
Your licence code decides your minimum age and which vehicle you can drive on the resulting learner’s licence. The theory sections themselves are the same for everyone.
Step 2 — Know the Three Sections You Must Pass
Each section is marked on its own. Scoring full marks on two sections and one mark under on the third is still an overall fail, which is why targeted learners test practice beats reading the manual cover to cover.
Road Rules
30 QSpeed limits, right of way, following distance, overtaking, alcohol limits and traffic signals.
Practise road rules →Road Signs
30 QRegulatory, warning and information signs, plus road markings. The highest pass mark of the three.
Practise road signs →Vehicle Controls
8 QWhat each control does and when you use it — the shortest section, and the easiest to bank marks in.
Practise vehicle controls →Step 3 — Practise Until the Score Stops Moving
Step 4 — What to Bring When You Book
Practice gets you through the paper; paperwork gets you into the room. You book in person at a DLTC and are given the next available slot — you cannot choose a date in advance.

Learners Test Practice — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the learners test in South Africa?▼
The learner’s licence test — known officially as the K53 test — is a written theory test that every learner driver in South Africa must pass before they can get a provisional driving licence. It is written at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) and consists of 68 multiple-choice questions.
How much learners test practice do I need before booking?▼
There is no official requirement, but the section that fails most candidates is road signs, which needs 77% to pass. Working through full 68-question mock tests until you are consistently scoring above the pass mark in all three sections is a better readiness signal than counting study hours.
How many questions are in the learners test?▼
The test has 68 questions split into three sections: 30 road rules questions, 30 road signs questions, and 8 vehicle controls questions. You have 60 minutes to complete all of them.
What is the pass mark for the learners test?▼
You must pass all three sections independently: Road Rules 22/30 (73%), Road Signs 23/30 (77%), and Vehicle Controls 6/8 (75%). Failing even one section means you have failed the overall test.
How old must I be to take the learners test?▼
The minimum age depends on the vehicle code: 16 for a Code 1 motorcycle up to 125cc, 18 for a Code 1 motorcycle over 125cc, 17 for a Code 8 car or light vehicle, and 18 for Code 10 and Code 14 heavy vehicles.
How long is a learner’s licence valid once I pass?▼
A learner’s licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue. If it expires before you pass your driving test you must re-apply from scratch — an expired learner’s licence cannot be renewed.
