What is a Code 8 Learner’s Licence?

A Code 8 learner’s licence allows you to drive any motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) not exceeding 3 500 kg — this covers all regular cars, bakkies, and light vans. It is the most common licence code in South Africa.

To get a Code 8 licence you must first pass the K53 learner’s test at a DLTC (Driver’s Licence Testing Centre). You can then drive on public roads accompanied by a licensed driver. Once you pass your driving test, your Code 8 licence is issued.

The minimum age is 17 years for Code 8.
