Riding & Passengers
- Headlamp lit day and night
- Helmet compulsory for rider and passenger
- No passenger on a 50 cc or smaller machine
- Maximum two people, plus two adults in a sidecar

- Nothing carried in front of the rider

Motorcycles and Freeways
Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 50 cc or less are not allowed on a freeway, along with pedal cycles, motor tricycles, quad bikes and electrically powered motorcycles of 230 kg or less. The common thread is that all of them are too slow to merge safely into freeway traffic.
Quad bikes and unlicensed off-road motorcycles may not be used on any public road, because they lack the lighting, braking and roadworthiness equipment the law requires.

What is the difference between a Code A and a Code A1 learners licence?▼
Code A1 covers motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125 cc or less without a sidecar, and can be applied for from age 16. Code A covers motorcycles of any engine capacity, including those over 125 cc, and requires a minimum age of 18.
How old do I need to be for a motorcycle learners test?▼
You must be at least 16 years old for a Code A1 learner's licence (motorcycles of 125 cc or less without a sidecar). For any larger motorcycle you must be at least 18.
Is the motorcycle learners test different from the car test?▼
The written learner's test covers the same three sections — rules of the road, road signs and vehicle controls — but the controls questions apply to a motorcycle rather than a car, and there are motorcycle-specific rules on helmets, headlights, riding in single file, carrying passengers and towing.
Must a motorcycle headlight be on during the day?▼
Yes. A motorcycle headlamp must be lit at all times on a public road, both day and night, because a motorcycle presents a very narrow silhouette that is easy for other drivers to miss.
