K53 Learners Licence — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about getting your K53 learner’s licence in South Africa.
About the K53 Test
What is the K53 test?▼
The K53 learner's licence test is a written theory test that all learner drivers in South Africa must pass before they can get a provisional driving licence. It is conducted at a Driver's Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) and consists of 68 multiple-choice questions.
How many questions are in the K53 test?▼
The test has 68 questions split into three sections: 30 road rules questions, 30 road signs questions, and 8 vehicle controls questions.
What is the pass mark for the K53 test?▼
You must pass all three sections independently: • Road Rules: 22/30 (73%) • Road Signs: 23/30 (77%) • Vehicle Controls: 6/8 (75%) Failing even one section means you have failed the overall test.
How long do I have to complete the K53 test?▼
You have 60 minutes to complete all 68 questions. The test is conducted on a computer at most DLTCs.
Is the K53 test on a computer or paper?▼
The majority of DLTCs now use a computerised system. Some older or rural centres may still use paper-based tests. Either way, the questions and format are the same.
How many answer options does each question have?▼
Most questions have 3–4 options. Some questions may have more than one correct answer — in that case, choose the "most correct" or "most applicable" option.
Requirements & Eligibility
How old must I be to take the K53 test?▼
The minimum age depends on the vehicle code: • Code 1 (motorcycle ≤125cc): 16 years • Code 1 (motorcycle >125cc): 18 years • Code 8 (car/light vehicle): 17 years • Code 10/14 (heavy vehicles): 18 years

You need: • A valid South African ID document • Two identical ID-sized photographs (35mm × 45mm) • Proof of residential address (not older than 3 months) • The application fee • Completed LL1 application form (available at the DLTC)
What is the learner's licence fee in Cape Town?▼
The application fee is R68. After passing the test, there is a R33 issuance fee for the actual licence card, totalling R101. Fees may differ slightly by province.
Validity & Renewal
How long is a South African learner's licence valid?▼
A learner's licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue. If it expires before you pass your driving test, you will need to re-apply for a new learner's licence.
Can I renew an expired learner's licence?▼
No — you cannot renew an expired learner's licence. You must re-apply from scratch, pay the full fee, and take the theory test again.
Booking & Test Day
How do I book my learner's licence test?▼
Visit your nearest DLTC with your documents and fee. The e-Natis system will generate a test date. You cannot choose a specific date in advance — you receive the next available slot.
What happens if I fail the K53 test?▼
You can re-book and re-sit the test. There is no waiting period between attempts, but you will need to pay the application fee again.
Can I cancel my booking?▼
Cancellations are only accepted for illness (doctor's certificate), funerals (death certificate), or exams (timetable required). The application fee is non-refundable.
Can I use a different language for the test?▼
Yes — the K53 test is available in all 11 official South African languages. Request your preferred language when you apply.
Driving with a Learner's Licence
Can I drive alone with a learner's licence?▼
No — you must always be accompanied by a licensed driver for the vehicle category you are driving. That person must sit in the front passenger seat.
Must I display L-plates with a learner's licence?▼
Yes — L-plates (white with red "L") must be displayed prominently at the front and rear of the vehicle whenever you are driving.
Can a learner driver use freeways?▼
