Test Day Guide
Everything you need to bring and exactly what happens at the DLTC on test day.
What to Bring
Always call your specific DLTC to confirm their requirements before your test day.
What Happens on the Day
Arrive early
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your booked time. DLTCs process applicants strictly in order and will turn you away if you miss your slot.
Submit your documents
Hand over your ID, proof of address, application form, and fee at the front desk. An official will check everything and capture your details.
Eye test
You'll do a short vision test before you can sit the written exam. Wear your glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.
The computerised test
You'll be seated at a computer. The test has 68 questions: 30 road rules, 30 road signs, and 8 vehicle controls. You must pass each section independently. You have 60 minutes total but most people finish in 20–30.
Results
Your results appear on screen immediately. If you pass all three sections, you pay the R33 issuance fee and your learner's licence is printed on the spot or posted to you.
If you fail
You can rebook and retry. There is no limit on attempts. You must wait at least 1 day before retesting. Use the time to practise your weak sections.
Pass Marks — Know These
All three sections must be passed independently in the same sitting.
Tips to Pass First Time
Read every question carefully — some are tricky because of words like "NOT", "EXCEPT", or "ALWAYS".
Don't spend too long on one question. Move on and come back if unsure — most software allows it.
The road signs section is the hardest for most people. Spend extra time studying signs before your test.
Pass marks: Road Rules 22/30 · Road Signs 23/30 · Vehicle Controls 6/8. You must pass ALL three.
You cannot use your phone during the test. Leave it in your bag.
The test is in English, Afrikaans, or Zulu at most DLTCs — ask when you book.
Some DLTCs require an appointment weeks in advance. Book as early as possible.
