What is a Code 14 Learner’s Licence?
A Code 14 learner’s licence authorises you to drive an extra-heavy motor vehicle (EHMV). This is the highest licence code in South Africa and covers articulated trucks (semis), interlinks, road trains, and any vehicle combination whose gross combination mass (GCM) exceeds the Code 10 threshold.
To obtain a Code 14 licence you must first pass the K53 learner’s test at a DLTC. You may then drive on public roads when accompanied by a licensed driver. Passing the Code 14 driving test qualifies you to operate the largest commercial vehicles in South Africa.
The minimum age is 18 years for Code 14. Prior Code 10 experience is not legally required but is strongly recommended.
