CLLT Practice Test
— Free 2026 Prep
Practice for the computerised learners licence test (CLLT) — the touch-screen K53 exam now used at most South African DLTCs. Same 68 questions, digital format, pass first time.
The CLLT did not change what is examined. It changed how you answer: questions arrive one at a time on a touchscreen, moving back through earlier answers is more awkward than on paper, and the result is calculated the moment you finish. Candidates who have only ever revised from books meet that interface for the first time under exam conditions. Practising on a screen — phone, tablet or computer — removes that surprise.
What Is the CLLT?
The CLLT (Computerised Learners Licence Test) is the digitalised version of the K53 learners test, now deployed at most DLTCs across South Africa. Instead of a paper answer sheet, you sit in front of a touch-screen computer terminal and answer each question by tapping your choice on screen.
The content is identical to the traditional K53 test: 68 questions split across road rules (30), road signs (30), and vehicle controls (8). Pass marks are the same — 22/30, 23/30, and 6/8 respectively.
The main practical difference is that you cannot easily go back and review previous answers in most CLLT implementations. Candidates also report that unfamiliarity with the touch-screen format under time pressure increases anxiety. Screen-based practice eliminates both issues.
CLLT vs Paper Test — Key Differences
How to Prepare for the CLLT
Practise on a screen
- Use a phone or tablet, not a book
- One question at a time, tap to answer
- K53Quiz simulates the CLLT format
- Builds muscle memory for the interface
Do timed exam simulations
- 3+ full 68-question runs before test day
- 60 minutes for all sections combined
- Don't stop — simulate real conditions
- Review mistakes after each run
Learn the weak spots first
- Road signs has the highest pass mark (77%)
- Speed limits and alcohol numbers are common fails
- Vehicle warning lights often tricky
- Four-way stop priority frequently tested
On test day
- Read each question twice before tapping
- Eliminate obviously wrong options first
- Don't rush — 60 min is enough time
- If unsure, best guess beats skipping
CLLT — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CLLT?▼
The CLLT (Computerised Learners Licence Test) is the digital version of the K53 learners test introduced at South African DLTCs. Instead of a paper-based test, you answer questions on a touch-screen computer terminal at the testing centre. The questions, pass marks, and structure are identical to the traditional K53 test.
How is the CLLT different from the old paper test?▼
The CLLT uses a touch-screen computer interface instead of paper answer sheets. Each question is displayed one at a time with images of signs or situations. You tap your answer on screen. The content — 68 questions across road rules, road signs, and vehicle controls — is exactly the same as the paper K53 test.
What changed when the CLLT was introduced?▼
The subject matter, the number of questions and the pass marks did not change. What changed is how the test is taken: questions are presented one at a time on a touch-screen terminal, reviewing earlier answers is less straightforward than on a paper script, and your result is calculated immediately when you finish. Practising on a screen before test day means the interface is not new to you.
Which DLTCs use the computerised test?▼
Most major DLTCs across South Africa have upgraded to CLLT. However, roll-out has been uneven — some smaller or rural DLTCs still use paper tests. Phone your nearest DLTC to confirm which format they use before your test date.
How do I prepare for the CLLT format?▼
The best preparation is to practise on a device — smartphone, tablet, or computer — rather than studying from printed books. K53Quiz simulates the CLLT question-by-question format with touch-friendly buttons. Do at least 3 full timed exam simulations before your test date.
